I don’t think it’s today. But I do wonder if one day we’ll wake up and know that the AI that released while we slept is going to literally change everything.
Today’s candidate is GPT-6 Astra. OpenAI’s system card opens with “Today, we are releasing GPT-6 Astra, the most capable model we have ever broadly deployed,” and the launch copy calls it “the world’s most intelligent and aligned model.” It goes first to a limited set of organizations, then to paying ChatGPT users over the coming days. The same system card notes that OpenAI judged Astra might reach what it calls the Critical level of cyber capability, and tightened its safeguards to match. Companies don’t write that sentence about a minor update.
So the superlatives are all present. The question is whether they’re true in the way that matters, which is the world being different on Friday than it was on Monday. Every lab claims the benchmarks. As far as I can tell, nobody has yet delivered the second thing in one night.
Part of the fatigue is the cadence. Anthropic’s Fable 5.1 came out on Tuesday. Google’s Gemini 3.8 Flash came out on Wednesday, its “fourth Flash model in under four months” by Artificial Analysis’s count. Astra came Thursday. Three frontier releases in three days, and Al Jazeera’s read this morning is that “new models are being released at an ever greater and greater rate.”
This morning I actually groaned. I’m ok with a speed break now.
