I know I maxed out every Fable account I had before dinner last night. This morning that looks like good timing, because Fable is switched off, for everyone, for now.
The Wall Street Journal’s headline says it plainly: Anthropic halts access to top AI models after U.S. ban on foreign use.
The detail, as reported. According to TIME, the government’s export control directive called for “suspending all access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models by any foreign national,” citing national security concerns, after the government became aware of what it described as a “potential narrow, non-universal jailbreak.” Al Jazeera reports that the letter reached Anthropic at 5:21pm on Friday, that it covered foreigners inside the United States as well, including people working at Anthropic, and that as a result the company had to “cut off access for everyone at short notice.” Anthropic’s statement: “We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible.”
A peremptory letter at 5:21 on a Friday, and the newest frontier model goes dark overnight. That’s the mechanism now, and it’s worth sitting with.
An even weightier question than when access comes back: does this mean you will have to be a US citizen in order to create great software in this world?
The frontier models are American, and yesterday the frontier acquired a border. The export controls most of us had heard of were about chips. This one reaches the person at the keyboard. Anthropic calls it a misunderstanding, and it may well be one. But a tool that a government can switch off by nationality is a different kind of tool from one it merely regulates, and every builder outside the United States found that out this weekend. For a founder abroad who has bet a product on a frontier model, that’s a new line on the risk register, and nobody priced it in.
Regardless of who you are, I hope you got it while you could. And long term, what if they only turn it back on for US citizens?
At least Claude reset all weekly limits, it seems. Still a pity. Back to ChatGPT 5.5 in the meantime.
