Pick Your Targets Well

First shared in my AI club, now Frontier Table, July 1, 2026.

Fable is back this morning, and it looks like we’ll get six days of it on subscription. Then API. Choose your targets judiciously.

Anthropic’s note yesterday: “As of today, June 30, the export controls on Fable 5 and Mythos 5 have been lifted”, and Fable 5 “will be available starting tomorrow, Wednesday, July 1, to users globally on the Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork.” The six days come from the same page: “For Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans, Fable 5 will be included for up to 50% of weekly usage limits through July 7, after which it will be available via usage credits.” Anthropic also explained the outage. Amazon researchers “had found a method of bypassing Fable 5’s safeguards,” and a new classifier now blocks that technique “in over 99% of cases.”

After July 7, then, it’s the meter. On the API Fable is $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output, and that price is why targeting matters.

I’m guessing security, bug fixes and refactors for finished code, and high-level architecture and roadmaps that lesser models can follow, if you aren’t finished with your builds.

Each of those is a job where an hour of the best judgment saves a hundred hours of a cheaper model’s labor. A vulnerability found this week is worth more than a feature shipped this week. A roadmap is the other bargain: a few thousand tokens of plan that steer a few million cheaper ones. Anthropic’s own framing points the same way. It says “the longer and more complex the task, the larger Fable 5’s lead over our other models”, and that Fable “scores highest among frontier models” on Cognition’s FrontierCode test of production-quality coding. Frontier judgment belongs on the decisions that everything downstream inherits, and a roadmap a lesser model can follow is exactly that kind of decision.

Johnson said that when a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it “concentrates his mind wonderfully.” Six days of Fable should do the same for a backlog.

For those who haven’t tried coding before: I highly recommend just typing in that thing you’ve always wanted to build and seeing if you get your wish.
